Tony's Tips

August 2024

We've reached the last month of a very cold winter and we can already see the first signs of spring! Magnolias are looking lovely, as are the very colourful Camellia japonica. As the month progresses, we can't wait to see peach and plum blossom and new growth on our roses.

We're also looking forward to the fabulous perfumes of Brown Boronia, Sweet Box and Daphne. Boronia and Daphne both love good drainage and will appreciate being planted up on a mound or in well-drained pots.

Our favourite and best strawberry, Big Sweetie, is available again, grown by runners for greater productivity and consistency. Plant in hanging baskets to help protect the fruit from rats and possums.

Serruria are flowering beautifully now and are great winter colour for dry spots or well-drained pots. Blushing Bride is my pick but there are many to choose from!

Things to Do:

  • Prune cold-sensitive perennials and shrubs such as Fuchsias, Plumbago, Salvias and Penstemons to promote new growth and flowers.
  • Feed roses with a specialist fertiliser to maximise growth, flowers and disease resistance. We like to use Blooming Roses.
  • Treat weeds in your lawn with a suitable selective weedicide. Look out for bindis in particular!
  • Protect peaches and nectarines from Leaf Curl with two to three sprays of Kocide while they are blossoming. This is a great product for preventing disease on roses and tomatoes too!
  • Prune hedges into shape now to ensure that their new growth is bushy and shapely in spring.

Plant of the Month

Lavandula Purple Reign

Lavandula Purple Reign

Lavandula Purple Reign is one of the best-performing lavenders in our climate. It is now flowering in all its glory and will continue until late spring. It is great in pots or garden beds and even does well as a hedge, thanks to its dense foliage. Plus it smells amazing!
