Tony's Tips

May 2024

The recent cold nights have brought on beautiful autumnal colour in the deciduous trees but also knocked off the last of the summer colour. The soil is still warm enough to plant cool-season seedlings but get them in soon to get the best out of the Pansies, Violas, Primulas and Poppies.

With the advent of cooler weather, many of our hardy plants from Australia and South Africa are starting to flower and will continue to do so for the next four to five months. We have a great range of Correas, Proteas, Leucadendrons and Grevilleas all looking good and now is an ideal time to plant.

Now is also a great time to refresh your hanging baskets with new season trailing Pansies. We have a wide range of these colourful seedlings and, with a bit of TLC, they are spectacular colour over a long period. Come see ours for a bit of inspiration!

Things to Do

  • Sow a green manure crop or do a 'no dig garden' if you're not using your veggie garden over winter. This will improve the soil with very little effort for a super productive spring.
  • Protect new flowers on outdoor Cymbidium Orchids and Cliveas with pet-safe snail pellets.
  • The soil is still warm enough to sneak in one last feed before winter. Also consider planting any larger plants now to give them time to settle in before spring.
  • It’s a good time to prune, divide and transplant many semi-dormant perennials such as Rhubarb, Easter Daisies, Campanula, and Flag Iris.

Plant of the Month

Scabiosa Powder Puff

Scabiosa Powder Puff

This month we're featuring the long-flowering perennial Scabiosa, also known as pincushions. Scabiosa is a low mound of a plant with beautiful pink or mauve flowers. Samantha’s Pink has been a standout performer for years but we have two new releases called Powder Puff Rose and Powder Puff Mauve. These varieties still bear masses of colourful pinwheel flowers over a long period but will spread a little wider—up to 80cm. Their flowers are pollinator attractors and also pick well.
