Tony's Tips
December 2022
December is all about colour. Whether you go for a traditional Christmas colour scheme or you prefer something a little brighter, December is all about colour. We have plenty of warmth-loving plants to enliven your home and garden. Go for instant colour with annuals such as Impatiens, Petunias, Vincas and Marigolds or add something a little more permanent with Hydrangeas, Mandevilleas, Calibrachoa, Fuchsias, Salvias and Roses.
Our living Christmas Trees are ideal for this season as well as long term potting. Just remember the foliage softens whilst indoors so take care when returning it to outside after Christmas. Start out with a shaded spot, water it regularly and give it a feed so that it adapts to being outdoors again.
With only a few weeks to go until Christmas and New Years now is the time to get your garden into top form for entertaining. Colourful flowers by the front and back door do wonders for creating a welcoming environment. Feed your lawn and mow regularly for lush green grass. If you aren’t sure exactly what your garden needs, we have a huge variety of fragrant, flowering and fruiting plants and associated products ideal for you or as gifts.
Things to Do:
- Summer proof your garden. Dose garden beds and pots with Rapid Soak wetting agent to ensure maximum penetration and storage of water. Also mulch with a good quality mulch to prevent evaporation.
- Keep up with fungal disease control on roses and tomatoes.
- Watch out for pests. If you haven’t already, protect lawns from Beetle Grub, Azaleas and Viburnums from Lace Bug and Cherries from Cherry Slug. Remember prevention is better than a cure!
- As they start flowering and setting fruit, feed tomatoes and other fruiting veggies with a suitable fertiliser to maximise fruiting and your harvest.
- Feed annuals with Phostrogen every fortnight to maximise flowers for Christmas and New Year.
Plant of the Month
Hibiscus Rio Clara
We have a lovely batch of Hibiscus Rio Clara available in five colours. This is a smaller, bushier variety that can grow to between 1 and 2 metres high and wide. It is a compact and colourful shrub that is great for sunny spots in a pot or a well drained garden bed. A long flowering period means you’ll be admiring these spectacular flowers all summer long!
